The honor bestowed upon COJL represents the highest safety award available from the Japanese government.
Chevron Japan Limited (COJL) added another prestigious award to its long-standing record of safety accomplishments when it earned the Japan Fire Defense's Director Award in June 2008. Awarded once a year, the Director Award represents the highest of five safety honors handed out annually by the Japanese government.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency in Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications named the winners. COJL was one of 31 Japanese organizations named, with only COJL and seven others receiving the Director's Award among the thousands of companies handling, processing and transporting products in the chemical manufacturing field.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) formulates various measures to prevent disasters, such as fire, earthquake, storm, or flood damage. Aside from overseeing the procedures and equipment needed to minimize the impact of disasters, the FDMA also develops the necessary legal basis to minimize damage when a disaster occurs. In short, it functions as the contact in the national government for local autonomous bodies and fire defense-related organizations to promote public safety.
The honor bestowed upon COJL represents the highest safety award available from the Japanese government. From the perspective within the COJL offices in Tokyo and its testing plant in Omaezaki, the Director's Award is one more accomplishment that comes out of the company's commitment to excellence. Much of that standard comes from COJL stressing a relentless analytical quest for high standards in product quality and plant efficiency.
By being safe, COJL delivers industry leading products to meet market demands. The Omazaeki plant remains unmatched for safety excellence. Its last incident occurred in 2002, and no worker has missed a Day Away from Work (DAFW) due to injury or incident since the plant opened in 1989. The Director's Award from the Fire and Disaster Management Agency brings more proof to COJL's safety record.
"All the working teams and contractors at Omaezaki site declare safety commitment as the top priority," said Yoshimi Anzai, Human Resources and Operations Excellence manager for COJL. "The award recognizes our commitment to this standard, and we will not stop making efforts to continue incident and injury free operation from now on. With great spirit we continue to try and prevent any calamity before it actually happens."
