Applications and Benefits
Finished lubricants contain one or more additives blended with one or more base oils. The additives are used to enhance the performance characteristics of the base oil. Some additives only affect one aspect of performance. For example viscosity index improvers allow the finished lubricant to attain different viscosity, depending on temperature. Other additives may have multiple effects. For example zinc dithiophosphate provides wear protection and helps inhibit oxidation.
For most products, multiple components are mixed together in an additive package and blended with the base oil. A particular component may be used in various additive packages within product lines or across multiple product lines.
