energy is powering Bangladesh’s economy
2 min read | november 21, 2022
As Chevron Bangladesh celebrates its 25th anniversary, we take stock of how our role as a leading provider of natural gas has helped power the nation’s economic growth.
reversal of fortune
Bangladesh’s economy has gone from emerging to soaring. Energy has played a vital role in helping the country’s incredible transformation, with government officials citing natural gas as the driving economic force.
Today Bangladesh is one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.
how it started
With the signing of two production sharing contracts in 1995, we have been partnering with the government to help ensure energy sufficiency.
When Muhammad Imrul Kabir joined Chevron in 2000, he struggled to keep his food refrigerated and home cool because of unreliable power supply. Today his home is equipped with a reliable air conditioner and other modern appliances.
“The quality of life I have now is all because of Chevron,” said Kabir, Chevron Bangladesh's director of Corporate Affairs. “It’s an amazing feeling when I think about the progress we’ve made.”
how it’s going
Today Chevron Bangladesh is the country's largest producer of natural gas and natural gas liquids. We produce 60% of the nation’s natural gas and more than 80% of its gas condensate.
beyond the fields
We aren’t just helping Bangladesh prosper in the fields where we operate; our efforts also reach communities, where we support economic development, education and health care activities and programs. Through our funding and sponsorship, we have:
- Helped farming families who live near Chevron-operated gas fields sustainably diversify and grow their incomes.
- Supported local youth by providing technical trades training.
- Provided affordable, quality health care to those living near the Bibiyana gas field.
We sponsored a 10-day mission in 2019 to treat 70 patients living near Chevron’s Jalalabad gas plant. They received free life-changing reconstructive surgeries to correct cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial anomalies.
